Ageing is a scary thought for some people. Positive ageing is far more palatable – so what is it and how does one achieve it? According to Dr Timothy Sharp of the Happiness Institute, the over 50’s have found a way! People go through many transitional periods in their lives – women in particular. The role of mother changes over time and with this comes a change in identity. Once children become independent and leave home , many women grapple with the question – “What do I do now?” Therapy and speaking to a counsellor can help coach you through the blocks to reinvention and help you take the first steps.Thats what I did – and it helped set me on a path to where I am today.
According to Dr Sharp, people have to plan for this stage in their lives and those who have done so, have set the foundations for ageing positively. Finding meaning and purpose at this stage in life can be difficult. Many man experience this once they retire – looking for ways to fill all the free time that they suddenly have. This challenge takes perseverance and one has to overcome certain self doubts. For me it was taking up the challenge of studying as a mature age student (awful title).
